The Joys of Being Still

It feels so good to be back with my blog community! But I must say, taking the break I did was much needed. I think “overdue” is a more accurate term. It’s a hard adjustment and one I always claim to be managing well, but I’m learning a few lessons about being still when my body says so. I tend to regularly operate without an adequate amount of quality sleep, but depriving the mind and body of ample rest and relaxation can present symptoms no one should ignore. I’ve enjoyed traveling and everything else I’ve done this year, but I think I’m going to slow it down for at least the next month or so and enjoy some less stressful activities, like visiting museums, theaters, and sports venues. Hopefully the Spring weather will finally catch up with its season so I can simply bask in the beautiful sunshine at the beach.

This week I tried a little something new. I know I’m late partaking in these popular events but hey – better late than never! It was the perfect therapeutic exercise and something I had no idea I’d enjoy so much. If you have an appreciation for art, paint & sip type events are the way to go. It’s a simple concept – you paint while sipping your drink of choice. I attended one with an instructor that was so encouraging, supportive, and such a blast to be around I felt completely inspired. Not only did I enjoy myself, but I’ve become so interested in painting techniques I may just find a class or someplace where I can learn more about the fine art of canvas painting. I’ve invested in so many other artists’ work over the years, why not invest in my own instead! Who knows, I could be so lucky as to have my series in a Royal Palace. LOL

I trust you all to not be too brutal, so kindly share your thoughts on my first piece.

I AM….

I believe these are two of the most powerful words a person can use to create the life they want. You have to think, speak, and believe you are who YOU say you are.

I committed myself to posting positive affirmations on Instagram today, reflecting on who I’ve always believed myself to be; who I am; who I wish to become. In the end I feel this is the most powerful of all.

From My Heart to Yours

“The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart.” – Maya Angelou

These words resonate so well with me. They’re on the home page of my blog to remind me to always give purpose to my words. I also want to show others my wish is to give them a reading experience.

I don’t count the words I write, but I make every effort to make those words count. They’re more than just scribble on a piece of paper or a fancy font. Once my words are read, digested, and translated in the readers mind, my hope is for them to affect their heart. To encourage change. To release a word in them. Whether used in poetry, drama, fiction, or non-fiction, words are powerful and should be used to serve a purpose.

Happy 90th Birthday Maya Angelou, and thank you for touching my heart with your words!

Atypical Woman

Dear Typical Guy,

You thought I was a “typical” woman

You approached me in your typical way

You spouted off your typical pick-up,

“I seemed to have lost my number. Can I have yours?”

Aww! Say farewell to your typical day.

Kind regards,

Word Fast – Day 2

Seek to understand, not to be understood.

We’ve all heard it said that there’s a reason you have two ears and one mouth: to listen more and speak less. The best way to remove sinful words from your mouth is to just not speak. I’m not talking about not ever speaking again, but honestly thinking about the words you want to say and asking yourself 1) do they serve a purpose?, and 2) should I just listen at this moment? Sometimes being so eager to be speak and be heard can make you miss out on a perfect opportunity to listen and learn. You should listen to understand, not just to reply.

If your words don’t serve a purpose, stop speaking.

That’s actually one of my favorite quotes. I first started using it about 10 years ago. Not only did I have it on repeat in my head, but it was one of the phrases I had posted in my office at work. That was the place I found people would talk so unnecessarily, wasting a good bit of time and effort that could better be used to add a great deal of productivity to their day. Co-workers would either complain about something or gossip about someone, but either way I wanted no parts of it. It’s still puzzling to me how any work got done.

Your thoughts of negativity, complaining, gossiping, etc., are problematic on their own, but have you ever watched what happens when those thoughts are put into words? They’re given life. They take up even more space as those around you feed into such thoughts and make them grow. Plant seeds of peace and allow others to feed off your harvest, in order to enrich your life and add more edifying conversations to your day.

In order to succeed in my word fast, it’s important for me to be careful about who and what I allow to deposit into my heart and mind. I cannot have negativity surrounding me and expect to purge it from my thoughts. So to all my friends and family…you’ve been warned!

I’m reading the @YouVersion plan ‘The Forty-Day Word Fast’. Check it out here:

Psalm 19:14 May the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight,
O Lord , my Rock and my Redeemer.

Word Fast – Day 1

Today I started my 40-day word fast to help rid of my impulse to complain, speak negatively, criticize, or be judgmental towards others. I usually start my days off with such a positive outlook, feeling as though I’m on a mission to spread peace and love…BUT…it seems at some point in almost every day there’s some action of another that causes me to give side eye and question that person’s very existence. That’s not the right attitude, I know. Rather than cuss them profusely I simply deliver some witty sarcasm highlighting their ignorance, and then walk away complaining of their behavior every opportunity I have. Realizing the only person being affected by my response is me, it’s time to change things up.

I may not be able to share my complete 40-day journey to self-improvement with you, but perhaps this may encourage some who’ll find benefit in their own word fast.

I’m reading the @YouVersion plan ‘The Forty-Day Word Fast’. Check it out here:

Psalm 141:3 Set a guard over my mouth, Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.

Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, JR.

It’s great to study the words of a man so many admire, but it’s the actions of living out such text that brings about change. When you read the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, JR., how do they most inspire you? What do they awaken in you that if expressed and/or put into motion could create an individual, community, state, etc. transformation?

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”

“Let no man pull you low enough to hate him.”

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.”

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

“The time is always right to do what’s right.”

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”

“Forgiveness is not an occasional act, it is a constant attitude.”

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”

“If you can’t fly then run; if you can’t run then walk; if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving.”

“If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps moving. You lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream.”

Another Man’s Treasure

You’re attracted to my looks.

You like my nose, my lips,

My breast, my thighs,

My butt, my hips.

It’s all for show.

For your ego, your pride.

Giving no attention,

To the woman inside.

He looks into my eyes.

He listens to my cries.

He loves the beauty in my style.

My winsome smile.

My sultry glance.

My contagious laugh.

The way I walk.

My elegance and class.

He shows appreciation for what you just weren’t seeing.

Like the natural essence of my being.

Pray Before You Overthink

So it was 38 minutes past midnight today and I was sitting in a friend’s car having a great conversation with him. It was so good, we continued to sit and chat after reaching our destination. Now I must admit, I know conversations with me can be a bit challenging because I tend to detour often. He says I veer off onto multiple highways instead of the path I set out. I don’t quite agree. I think I just encounter several roundabouts with eye-catching scenery at each exit, all deserving of commentary, but eventually I circle back.

Anyway, one thing we talked about were these dreadful new year’s resolutions. OMG!!! I said I hate trying to think of what I want to change about myself because it causes me to be over critical. I find I come out of thought feeling worse about my situation instead of better. As I continued to talk and talk and talk about that point, his facial expressions became more and more animated and simply amusing. I get a lot of “are you finished yet?” and head tilting from him all the time, but knowing my best friend as well as I do, this non-verbal communication was much louder. Yeah, I’d definitely traveled another highway into a whole different state. It wasn’t even a neighboring state. I was damn near across the country, but made it back in record time.

Fast forward to an hour eighteen minutes past midnight and guess what – I HAVE A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION!!! I am going to make a conscious effort not to overthink. I am my worst enemy in situations of thought because I get in my head so much. Overthinking creates problems that were never there. It causes so much question of a good thing it gets ruined. It often causes unnecessary confusion that becomes difficult to escape. Overthinking is an obsession of mine, but I’ve found a substitute to help kick that bad habit: PRAYING. Rather than thinking 10x over I’m going to pray once (maybe twice) and follow God’s lead. No matter how much I think about something, there’s no telling if my sole decision of words or actions are correct. I’m a praying woman, but I recognize how much I still try to control a situation I intended to turn over to God.

Need for control and fear of failure and disappointment are insecurities controlling my life. It’s time to release myself from such bondage to live free in faith. No more overthinking! Pray…..breathe…..let faith take over. That’s my new process. I may falter during this process, but I know I have a friend who’ll keep me on track, if only for selfish reasons. Clearly by now he’s hoping I find shortcuts to everywhere.

Favorite Photo of 2017

I love this weekly photo challenge, as it makes me reflect on how far I’ve come in a year. This is by far my favorite photo of 2017. It was taken on January 1st, the first day following a year of turmoil in my life. I’d loss my Mother, Grandmother, Aunt and Uncle in a matter of eight months of 2016, making it hard for me to smile, laugh, venture out, or appreciate life that year. On this day I gave myself permission to start the path to healing. It began with a trip to the beach with some wonderful friends to enjoy lunch, great conversation, drinks, and shopping. The emotions of that day lead to this moment right here. It was quite liberating!
