Writing is an art

Inviting others to view

Stories from your mind

From My Heart to Yours

“The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart.” – Maya Angelou

These words resonate so well with me. They’re on the home page of my blog to remind me to always give purpose to my words. I also want to show others my wish is to give them a reading experience.

I don’t count the words I write, but I make every effort to make those words count. They’re more than just scribble on a piece of paper or a fancy font. Once my words are read, digested, and translated in the readers mind, my hope is for them to affect their heart. To encourage change. To release a word in them. Whether used in poetry, drama, fiction, or non-fiction, words are powerful and should be used to serve a purpose.

Happy 90th Birthday Maya Angelou, and thank you for touching my heart with your words!

Another Man’s Treasure

You’re attracted to my looks.

You like my nose, my lips,

My breast, my thighs,

My butt, my hips.

It’s all for show.

For your ego, your pride.

Giving no attention,

To the woman inside.

He looks into my eyes.

He listens to my cries.

He loves the beauty in my style.

My winsome smile.

My sultry glance.

My contagious laugh.

The way I walk.

My elegance and class.

He shows appreciation for what you just weren’t seeing.

Like the natural essence of my being.

A Player’s Perspective

This photo challenge took me back several years to when my son and I had a chance to visit Emirates Stadium, the home of our favorite soccer team – ARSENAL!!!  We toured the grounds, locker room, fitness area, the Director’s Box, and even took pictures with the FA Cup. Every bit of it was as exciting as we’d hoped, but nothing stopped us in our tracks more than standing in the very tunnel the players exit for every match. My son, who grew up playing competitive soccer in the US, has admired Arsenal most of his life. At this moment, he had the opportunity to stand where they stand waiting to hit the pitch. This is a player’s perspective:

I Miss You, Mom!

My heart aches always
No longer seeing your face
My lifeline is gone

Advice you gave me
Proud to have it memorized
Guiding my footsteps

A natural bond
Your one and only daughter
Our love’s forever

Today is a good day!

I woke up this morning with a smile on my face.
I said ‘Today’s gonna be a good day!’
Pulled myself up, thought hmmm, what’s first?
A little prayer, that’s what I have to say.

My mind tried to fight me.
Thoughts kept rushing thru my head.
My body was at odds, just wanting to go back to bed.

I got myself together.
Ate real well to make it last.
I stepped outside and saw a friend.
In that moment we had a blast.

Got in my car, time to head to work.
It’s payday and I’m inspired.
Now I have a boost of energy and my body is no longer tired.

Folks complaining, whatever the reason
Sometimes there doesn’t have to be one.
They came to me, started whining and nagging.
Fight or flight, call it quits, I’m done.

Now I’m writing just so I can clear my mind.
Staying peaceful takes patience and time.
Write a new post for today’s word prompt?
You’re kidding, they want me to rhyme!!!

Deceptive Cadence

The music captures my soul

Harmony draws me in

Commanding my attention to every note

Quarter, half, whole

Duet so dynamic I listen closer

Familiar words elevated to a higher key

Accompanied by a sweet sound

Synchronized, with a beautiful melody

The vibrato and modulation left me in silence

It’s the finale

No encore

Deceptive cadence

A Solitary Haiku

I sit here alone.

Shadows highlight my beauty.

My future is bright.

Half of what, you ask.

As with many bloggers, and writers in general, the idea for this blog came from personal experience. “Don’t forget the half” is something I say in the doctor’s office almost every time they record my height. I stand proudly at 5’9.5″, but either in their haste or total disregard that translates to them as 5’9″. Now I’ll admit, I haven’t been so outspoken when the same oversight occurs with my weight, but that’s another story.

The flow of this blog will address how people cut themselves short, and allow others to do the same, not recognizing their full potential or living their authentic life. Not too long ago I watched an Oprah Winfrey special during which TD Jakes spoke something very profound. He said “when you are built to be tall, you will endanger your position if you lower your perspective.” In other words, people don’t need to agree with or accept your position. That’s why it’s yours, not theirs. State it…Claim it…Live it!

I could go on, and I plan on doing just that, but not right now.  I want to leave you with something to think about as you go thru your day tomorrow.  Pay attention to how you address people, how they address you, and everything you may say about yourself and anything in your life.  If you think about shying away from saying something simply because you want to downplay yourself, don’t.  DON’T FORGET THE HALF!!!

I’d love to hear your feedback. Let’s talk about the “half” you’ve been neglecting.
