The Joys of Being Still

It feels so good to be back with my blog community! But I must say, taking the break I did was much needed. I think “overdue” is a more accurate term. It’s a hard adjustment and one I always claim to be managing well, but I’m learning a few lessons about being still when my body says so. I tend to regularly operate without an adequate amount of quality sleep, but depriving the mind and body of ample rest and relaxation can present symptoms no one should ignore. I’ve enjoyed traveling and everything else I’ve done this year, but I think I’m going to slow it down for at least the next month or so and enjoy some less stressful activities, like visiting museums, theaters, and sports venues. Hopefully the Spring weather will finally catch up with its season so I can simply bask in the beautiful sunshine at the beach.

This week I tried a little something new. I know I’m late partaking in these popular events but hey – better late than never! It was the perfect therapeutic exercise and something I had no idea I’d enjoy so much. If you have an appreciation for art, paint & sip type events are the way to go. It’s a simple concept – you paint while sipping your drink of choice. I attended one with an instructor that was so encouraging, supportive, and such a blast to be around I felt completely inspired. Not only did I enjoy myself, but I’ve become so interested in painting techniques I may just find a class or someplace where I can learn more about the fine art of canvas painting. I’ve invested in so many other artists’ work over the years, why not invest in my own instead! Who knows, I could be so lucky as to have my series in a Royal Palace. LOL

I trust you all to not be too brutal, so kindly share your thoughts on my first piece.

Day 4…Sun.

I felt compelled to share these images again for week #151 of Tuesday Photo Challenge. I hope you enjoy!

Don't Forget the Half

During my air travel to Florida this past December, I captured the brilliance of the sun from such a fantastic vantage point.

These still photos were taken as we were departing North Carolina, just as the sun began to rise to a perfect shine over the horizon.

This video was caught during our descent, as the clouds enhanced the view of such a perfect circle of light appearing to pulsate in the sky.

Genesis 1: 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,
19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

Battle of the Books

Jon’s passion for war stories intensified his empathy with people who’d loss family to battle, such like himself. Local colleges and universities consider Jon the oracle on historical literature because of the volumes of books he’s read on the subject matter. As usual, Jon visited the neighborhood bookstore’s sidewalk sale after brunch with colleagues, braving the frigid temperatures for the next big book find.

Relaxing mid-day

Monotonous cries erupt

Disturbing my dreams

Of swimming in blue water

And sipping a root beer float

A Shocking Pair

She sees no darkness

As their watchful eyes wonder

Her ecstatic smile

Pleasures of a secret love

Guess who’s coming to dinner

USS Intrepid

Oh how I love the word prompts of today, especially for the memories they inspire. As soon as I saw the word “intrepid” I immediately thought of my years of growing up in New York City. It’s safe to say my friends and I were intrepid teenagers, but those aren’t the memories I’m sharing today.

The few years following high school graduation were particularly full of excitement and mischievous behavior for us young adults, discovering more of what the “streets” had to offer outside the clutches of our overprotective parents. One night we all took a trip to the big city for a party on the USS Intrepid. Special Ed, a popular hip hop artist at the time, was performing for a huge publicity event. It was one of our many adventurous outings of those days, with the added anticipation of meeting who we considered to be a local celebrity (raised in Brooklyn). Not sure who remembers but Special Ed’s song “I Got It Made” was a hit on the party scene back then, howbeit he was never quite considered “big league.”

Anyway, I remember dancing all night long, being silly with my friends, and of course checking out the fellas, but I also remember being amazed at how all of the night’s events were happening on an old aircraft carrier from World War II and the Vietnam War. As a teenager I can’t say I cared too much, considering the opportunity we were given. At this moment, however, it disgust me to think we were actually allowed to party on an vessel where Navy men made the ultimate sacrifice decades prior.

Eventually I made it back to the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, now a National Historic Landmark. I don’t have any original pictures but here are some courtesy of the internet.

Travel Diary, Chapter 50

A few weeks ago I traveled to the Dominican Republic for a friend’s wedding. I’d heard so many things about this popular “romantic getaway” destination, but turns out it’s a great vacation for a loving mother and son duo too.

We stayed at a beautiful all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana and it was worth every penny. As much as I love eating, I can easily say the buffets were where I got most of my return on investment. Well, there and the bar – best Pina Coladas I’ve ever had! I was truly in paradise.

I’ve always felt a little indifferent about beach weddings because the thought of dressing up to spend time on a beach seemed oxymoronic to me. I have to admit this experience changed my mind and my life because everything about the wedding was absolutely beautiful. Not only did the beach set the stage for breathtaking backdrops both live and in pictures, but such an intimate venue shared with a small gathering of family and friends made this ceremonial occasion even more special.

I would definitely visit Punta Cana again, but preferably when I have more time to venture out on some of their thrill-seeking excursions. Me in an ATV or zip lining ought to make for an interesting story (after recovery).

I learned to value

Little things of sentiment

No one else could understand
