KWANZAA is a seven day cultural holiday honored in the African and African-American communities, in celebration of their culture, family, and history. It is observed in the US from 26th December – 1st January. The name Kwanzaa, or “matunda ya kwanza” in the Swahili language, translates to “first fruits” and it signifies the first fruits of the harvest.
Tonight, 27th December we light the first red candle and discuss the principle of KUJICHAGULIA representing SELF-DETERMINATION, which teaches us to create and develop ourselves/our identity rather than allowing outside influences to define us.
I hope you return tomorrow for day 3 of Kwanzaa, UJIMA. If you missed day 1, Umoja, you can find it here.
