So often they’d sit and enjoy each other’s company, excited to share stories of their growing up together in New York City. Those days became flashing memories, passing through but never staying too long. Youth was more than eighty years behind them; decades of stories now told only in pictures.
The day they met, Selena was frolicking in the front yard playing with her doll, Jade, and Kim’s family was returning from church. Two shy little girls content in their respective space, until Selena noticed Kim was holding a similar doll, tightly and close to her body. Selena smiled ever so slightly and, almost in a whisper, said “Hi.” That was the moment their shared journey began, as they forged a friendship and remained inseparable most of their lives. That was a long time ago and now, over eight decades later, the one who first said hello was left standing alone whispering a final goodbye to her best friend.
After the funeral, Kim’s grandchildren asked Selena to return home with them to look at pictures and share stories of that special friendship. They began sorting through storage bins filled with pictures and came across one of Selena and Kim holding hands as they played in the yard the day they met. Selena, seeing the photo and having flashbacks of that day, became emotional and peacefully closed her eyes. Seconds later, Kim’s grandchildren asked “Who’s this?” in a joking manner. As soon as Selena looked up she began to cry. There it was, the little doll Kim was holding the day she and Selena met. Selena reached for the doll, then began to cry as she held it tightly and close to her body and whispered…..”Hi.”.
